Smarter Choices

Overview

Smarter choices refers to sustainable travel modes that reduce the negative impacts of travel such as congestion, pollutant and carbon emissions, and low activity levels. They aim to influence travel choice, encourage the use of public transport, cycling, walking and also provide the right information to enable travel choice. They include initiatives like travel planning, personalised travel planning, travel awareness campaigns, car clubs and car sharing and teleworking.

In 2005, the Department for Transport (DfT) produced guidance on smarter choices. In addition, the DfT has provided the findings of trials evaluating low cost interventions to encourage the use of sustainable transport.

Further information on smarter choices is available with regard to sustainable travel guides, travel plans, car sharing and car clubs.
